We demand that the site is compulsorily acquired by the local council and the state government. Such an important area should be owned and controlled by the community and this is the only way to ensure that the future of the Preston Market is under democratic control. Other precious local markets, such as the Dandenong and South Melbourne markets, are already owned and run by their council, ensuring that the vibrancy and diversity they bring to their local suburbs is ensured for future generations.

The government will say this is too expensive, but we know this is not true. The Victorian Government spent over $1.5 billion replacing the old train tickets with Myki cards, and currently they plan to build over $2 billion of extra prisons. Buying the Preston Market would be a fraction of these costs and would safeguard our beloved market from destruction in the future.
