Laura at Farinacci

Laura Fazio has been coming to Preston Market since she was a little girl, and now brings her own daughter here every week to go to the deli and get pizza. Laura helped her daughter make a diorama for the children and parents at her kinder raising awareness about what will happen if we do not stand up and save our market.

How long have you been coming to Preston Market?

“We’ve been going to the market for so long, I can’t even remember not going. The market is similar to what my parents knew in Italy. My dad passed away and he loved Preston, and for him the market was everything. I know he would be saying ‘don’t let them ruin it!’ I am going to make sure we preserve what we have in this area, I don’t care what the cost is.”

What do you think of the community consultation process?

“I am really angry at how they have communicated this. A lot of people who use the market definitely do not use the internet so the online community consultation is all a cover. My duty is to make sure that I call the oldies and make sure that they understand what is going to happen. They don’t want it to change, they don’t need it to change, it has everything they want there. No one wants it to change.”

What is so special about Preston Market?

“For me it is about the community, it always will be. I don’t care what resources they have on offer. The market has that feel for me, it feels like home, I love it! I’ll go and get my deli meat from Farinacci’s every Saturday, the stallholders know us, they’ve seen my child grow up. I can’t imagine not seeing them, you know?”

What do you think needs to happen to save the market?

“I am absolutely on board with the government and the council buying the land. I am actually surprised that it was privately owned. We never knew it was privately owned, I mean who owns this stuff right? I thought it was the government or the council!”
